Will GTA 6 Run at 60FPS? Why Analysts Say 30 Is More Likely
Technical analysts have poured cold water on 60FPS hopes — even on PS5 Pro. The culprit is vehicle physics, not graphics. Here is the argument, the 40FPS compromise, and what Rockstar has actually said.
Rockstar has said nothing. Everyone else has said plenty.
Four months out, Rockstar has published no performance information about GTA 6 whatsoever — no target frame rate, no resolution, no mode breakdown, no PS5 Pro specifics.
What we have instead is technical analysis, and the consensus is not what most people want to hear.
The analyst position
Digital Foundry and other technical analysts have landed in roughly the same place: GTA 6 is unlikely to offer a 60FPS mode on any current console, including PS5 Pro.
The reasoning is worth understanding, because it is not the usual "the graphics are too good" argument.
Why it is a CPU problem, not a GPU problem
The bottleneck identified is vehicle physics. Simulating a large number of vehicles with detailed physics is computationally expensive on the CPU, and CPU-bound workloads are exactly what forces open-world simulation games to 30FPS.
This is why the PS5 Pro does not solve it:
Doubling the frame rate means halving the frame budget for everything, including physics. A better GPU cannot buy that back.
As one analyst put it, 60FPS "feels like a bridge too far."
The 40FPS compromise
The most-discussed middle ground is a 40FPS mode. On a 120Hz display, 40FPS is a clean divisor with consistent frame pacing, and it delivers a genuinely noticeable improvement over 30 without needing the full doubling of the frame budget.
Several analysts have suggested a 40FPS mode on PS5 Pro would be "a good option if 60 is off the table." Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Horizon Forbidden West have both shipped modes like this to positive reception.
The historical precedent
It is worth noting how consistent Rockstar has been here:
| Game | Launch frame rate |
|---|---|
| GTA IV | 30FPS |
| GTA V (PS3/360) | 30FPS |
| GTA V (PS4/Xbox One) | 30FPS |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 30FPS |
Every Rockstar open-world release has launched at 30FPS on console. GTA V only got a 60FPS mode with the PS5/Xbox Series re-release in 2022 — nine years after launch.
The community reaction
Not warm. A poll circulating in mid-July suggested over 57% of respondents would skip the game if it launched locked at 30FPS on console.
That number should be taken with a large grain of salt — poll respondents in a heated thread are not representative buyers, and "I won't buy it" sentiment historically evaporates on launch day. GTA 6 is projected to sell 37–51 million copies in week one regardless.
But the sentiment is real, and it reflects a genuine shift: 60FPS has become an expectation on current-gen hardware in a way it simply was not in 2013.
What we do not know
Being clear about the gaps:
Everything above is informed analysis based on hardware characteristics and Rockstar's track record. It is not an announcement.
When we will find out
Performance details typically arrive with the final marketing beat — either a gameplay deep-dive or the pre-launch preview embargo lifting, usually two to four weeks before release.
For a November 19 launch, that puts the real answer somewhere in late October or early November. Trailer 3, whenever it lands, will be a rendered trailer and will tell you nothing reliable about frame rate.
