Pre-Order

GTA 6 Pre-Orders Are Breaking Every Record: The Newzoo Numbers Explained

Analytics firm Newzoo calls it "the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded" — around $260 million globally in week one, and a projected 37 to 51 million copies sold in launch week. Here is what those numbers actually mean.

The headline figure

Analytics firm Newzoo has published the first serious third-party read on GTA 6 pre-orders, and the summary line is not subtle: this is "the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded."

Here are the numbers, with the caveats they deserve.

Week one of pre-orders

MetricFigureScope
Digital pre-order spend~$180 millionUS + five largest European markets
Estimated global spend~$260 millionExtrapolated from GTA V player distribution
Period coveredLast week of June 2026Pre-orders opened June 25

The $180 million figure is the measured one. The $260 million is an estimate — Newzoo scaled the measured markets up using GTA V's known regional player split. That is a reasonable method, but it is a model, not a receipt.

The launch-week projection

This is where the eye-catching numbers come from. Newzoo projects:

  • Optimistic case: ~$4.5 billion in sales by end of launch week — roughly 51 million copies
  • Conservative case: ~$3.3 billion by end of launch week — roughly 37 million copies
  • The gap between those two exists for a specific reason. GTA 6 is the most anticipated game ever made, which means its pre-orders may be unusually front-loaded — a larger share of total launch sales landing early, rather than pre-orders being a reliable predictor of a long tail. The conservative case assumes exactly that.

Either way, the comparison is stark: GTA V took three days to reach $1 billion. GTA 6 is projected to do it in a fraction of that.

What is confirmed versus what is modelled

Because this gets flattened in a lot of coverage, worth separating clearly:

    Confirmed:

  • Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026
  • Standard $79.99 / Ultimate $99.99
  • Take-Two has guided FY2027 net bookings to $8.0–8.2 billion, built around the November 19 launch
  • Modelled or reported, not official:

  • The $180M / $260M week-one figures (Newzoo estimates)
  • The 37–51 million launch-week range (Newzoo projection)
  • The widely-cited "39 million copies pre-ordered" number
  • The "$1 billion in the first hour" claim
  • Rockstar and Take-Two have published no official pre-order figures at all. Every number circulating right now comes from analysts, retail trackers or unnamed sources.

    When we actually find out

August 7, 2026. Take-Two reports Q1 FY2027 before market open, covering the quarter that ended June 30 — which captures the first five days of the pre-order window. It is the first official financial snapshot that will contain any GTA 6 pre-order activity at all.

It will be a partial picture — five days of a five-month window — but it will be *real*. See our preview of the August 7 call.

A note on the $8 billion guidance

Take-Two's FY2027 net bookings guidance of $8.0–8.2 billion is the most reliable signal available, because a public company's guidance carries legal weight that an analyst note does not.

For scale: Take-Two closed FY2026 with record net bookings of $6.72 billion. The FY2027 guidance implies roughly $1.3–1.5 billion of incremental bookings, in a fiscal year where GTA 6 is only on sale for part of the period. That is the company telling you, in the most binding language it has, how big it expects this to be.
